Nelle settimane scorse abbiamo intervistato alcuni ragazzi che hanno lasciato l’Italia, la Calabria, per trasferirsi in Gran Bretagna. Abbiamo chiesto loro una riflessione sul risultato del referendum con cui i britannici hanno chiuso la porta all’Europa, decretando l’uscita dall’Unione.

Oggi abbiamo incontrato Sarah Gale. Sarah viene da Warrington, città della contea del Cheshire. E’ laureata e possiede il BSC Honours Degree in Zoologia e da gennaio di quest’anno vive a Palmi, dove è insegnante madrelingua alla Pingu’s English School.

Sarah, when did you come in Italy and why? (Sarah, quando e perché sei arrivata in Italia?)

I came to Italy in January 2016 to start my job as an English teacher. I wanted a new start and I love working with children so teaching in a different country seemed to be perfect for me. (Sono arrivata in Italia a gennaio di quest’anno per lavorare come insegnante di lingua inglese. Avevo voglia di qualcosa di nuovo e ad a me piace lavorare con i bambini, e lavorare in un Paese diverso dal mio mi è sembrata un’opportunità perfetta).

What does “leave” mean for you and for all British who live in Italy, or in any European country? (Cosa rappresenta aver scelto di lasciare l’Europa per i britannici che vivono in Italia o negli altri Paesi dell’Unione?)

It is worth pointing out that most changes won’t be immediate, it could take up to 2 years for many of them. Nobody really knows for sure. One of the biggest impacts that has already happened is the decline of the value in the British Pound. It has been drastic and could be disastrous for International businesses and anyone living and working in the UK. Travel will be much more difficult and more expensive. Under the EU all Europeans have a freedom of movement (within Europe). This is what makes going abroad very easy and fairly inexpensive. A vote to leave might take this away, which would mean applying for a work visa  (if people are working and living abroad). It also means that studying abroad will be even more expensive, currently students and young people have a lot of options when it comes to studies and travel. It would be a shame to possibly take away the many opportunites the EU gives to young people and students within the EU. However if the government and the EU agree again on the freedom of movement (within the EU) then it may not have an effect at all. (Intanto va detto che molti cambiamenti non saranno immediati, ci vorranno 2 anni perché avvengano. Nessuno sa con certezza come stiano le cose. Una delle conseguenze più importanti già avvenuta, è l’indebolimento del valore della moneta. È una conseguenza e potrebbe essere disastroso per l’economia internazionale e per chiunque vive e lavora in Gran Bretagna. Viaggiare sarà più difficile e costoso. Essere nell’Unione consentiva alle persone libertà di movimento nell’UE. Questo rendeva i viaggi all’estero semplici ed economici. Aver scelto il leave potrebbe cambiare tutto ciò, e potrebbe significare la richiesta di un visto (per chi vive e lavora all’estero). Significa inoltre che studiare all’estero sarà più caro, e attualmente i giovani hanno diverse alternative per studiare e viaggiare. Sarebbe un peccato perdere le tante opportunità che l’Europa unita offre ai ragazzi ed agli studenti che vivono nell’UE. Tuttavia, se il Governo e l’UE concordano ancora sulla libertà di movimento all’interno dei Paesi dell’Unione, allora l’uscita dall’Unione Europea potrebbe non avere grossi effetti.)

I know you were for “remain” in Europe. Why have the British voted to leave the EU? (So che sei stata sostenitrice del remain. Perché i britannici hanno scelto di uscire dall’Unione Europea?)

There are many reasons. The voting was split almost 50/50. The official numbers are: Remain (48%) and Leave (52%). Statistically most of the younger generation voted to remain while a lot of the older generation (my parents age) voted to leave. In fact my own parents voted to leave. However I know a lot of young people also voted to leave and a lot of older people who voted to remain. To be clear I don’t think the main reason people voted to leave was their age. I think a large reason is that many people remember a time when we joined the EU and remember the changes well. They have also seen the negative impacts. They have been through times when the EU have not done great things for the UK. Another reason could be a lot of the negative media and lies surrounding immigration. Brexit (the main leave campaigners) have spread a lot of lies about immigrants and immigration. They even went as far as promising Immigration would decline, unfortunately this is cannot be promised (It can be predicted). I believe it has scared many people into voting leave. Both the remain and leave side have used predictions and facts to scare people into voting. Many people voted leave because they wanted change, any change at any cost. This is understandable. The EU is not perfect and have made many mistakes so I suppose people voted to leave because they didn’t want more mistakes. Whatever way people voted most of them did so for the good of their children and future generations. I do not think this is a good move for the UK but it has happened. It is time to move on and work together to build a better future. It is important to point out the a vote to Leave doesn’t just affect the UK, it also affects the rest of the EU as well.The referendum has revealed a lot of racist behavior (which is devastating) but it has also encouraged many people to get involved in politics. This is a good thing. I think that whatever the result, negative things might have happened anyway. Perhaps the future of the UK (and the rest of Europe) is bright, I don’t know. But I know that I trust God, and whatever happens the Lord will take a bad situation and make it better. We can all do our part to spread positivity and love. (I motivi sono molti. La nazione si è quasi divisa. I numeri ufficiali sono: remain (48%) e leave (52%). Statisticamente la maggior parte delle giovani generazioni ha votato per restare nell’Unione mentre le generazioni più adulte hanno votato per lasciarla. Anche i miei genitori hanno votato leave. Ma conosco molti giovani che hanno votato per il leave così come molte persone adulte che hanno scelto il remain. Ad essere sinceri non penso che abbia influito l’età nella scelta del voto. Penso che un motivo sia stato che molte persone ricordano quando siamo entrati nell’UE e ricordano bene i cambiamenti. Hanno visto anche gli effetti negativi. Ci sono stati periodi in cui l’UE non ha fatto molto per il Regno Unito. Un altro motivo potrebbero essere le bugie sull’immigrazione e l’influenza negativa dei media. I principali sostenitori della Brexit hanno diffuso tante bugie sugli immigrati e sull’immigrazione. Sono persino arrivati al punto di assicurare che l’immigrazione sarebbe diminuita con l’uscita dall’Unione, sfortunatamente per loro questo non può essere garantito (ma si può prevedere). Credo che questo abbia indotto molte persone a votare per il leave. I sostenitori del remain, come quelli del leave, hanno utilizzato previsioni e dati per indurre le persone a votare. In molti hanno votato leave perché volevano un cambiamento, qualsiasi cambiamento a tutti i costi. Ed è una cosa incomprensibile. L’UE non è perfetta ed ha commesso molti errori, per questo credo che le persone hanno votato leave, perché non vogliono che vengano commessi altri errori. In qualunque modo le persone hanno votato, in molti lo hanno fatto per il bene dei loro figli e per le generazioni future. Non penso sia stata una mossa buona per il Regno Unito ma ormai è andata così. È tempo di darsi da fare e lavorare insieme per costruire un futuro migliore. Va detto che il leave non ha effetti solo sul Regno Unito ma anche sul resto dell’Europa. Il referendum ha messo in luce molti comportamenti razzisti (e questa cosa è paurosa) ma ha anche spinto molte persone ad impegnarsi in politica. Ed è una cosa buona. Penso che a prescindere dal risultato, le cose negative sarebbero successe lo stesso. Forse il futuro del Regno Unito (e del resto dell’Europa) forse è brillante, non lo so. Ma so che credo in Dio e qualsiasi cosa accadrà, Egli cambierà in meglio ogni situazione difficile. Dobbiamo fare tutti la nostra parte per diffondere positività e bene.)
